PDF documents play an important role in communication with stakeholders. They are THE exchange medium when it comes to platform-independent publishing and a loss- and error-free output of the document on any output device.

Information material, brochures, flyers, operating instructions, etc. are therefore often made available for download as PDFs. The PDF sub-standard UA (which stands for “Universal Accessibility”) enables the creation of documents that meet the requirements for accessible PDF documents. However, this is a complex process that requires a great deal of expertise.

Accessible documents: How PDF/UA works

People with visual impairments or motor disabilities cannot easily use PDF documents – the static layout allows the exact reproduction of the content, but without free scalability of the text and image elements. PDF/UA is the solution here. The content can be read aloud using appropriate reading software (screen reader). For this to be practicable, the necessary format requirements must be created:

  • Hide “superfluous” elements (e.g. pagination)
  • Define the reading order (especially for multi-column layouts)
  • Store alternative texts for graphics and tables
  • Specially mark abbreviations and foreign-language words
  • and many more!

You do not have a Word or InDesign document, but still want to publish your PDF as PDF/UA? In this case, please select the option “I don’t have an InDesign template but still need a solution”. We will then create an individual offer to convert your PDF into a PDF/UA.
